Calcium Carbonate Market Trends Thrives as Paper Sector Emerges as a Major End-User

 Market Scope

The calcium carbonate market will be valued at USD 63.87 Billion by 2028, and record a 4.20% CAGR between 2021 and 2028, says MRFR (Market Research Future).

Market Boosters and Restraints

Heightened demand for calcium carbonate from the paper and plastic industry favors the worldwide market. Calcium carbonate has use as a coating pigment and filler owing to its whitening and printing properties. Escalating demand for bulkier and brighter paper is a major reason for call calcium carbonate’s extensive use in the paper industry.

Calcium carbonate market has numerous beneficial properties, such as pH stabilizing effect, low abrasiveness, low electrolyte content, while improving anticorrosion, rheological and weather resistance properties. The product also has uses as a filler in high gloss coating items in powder coating. Moreover, adding calcium carbonate helps bring down costs and is an eco-friendly product that needs reduced levels of heavy metals, including toys and baby carriages. It further elevates the property of a variety of powder coating by augmenting the powder rate and spray area of the paint.

Opportunities

At present, calcium carbonate has major uses in plastic, paper, adhesives & sealants and paints & coatings industries. However, there are a few potential use-cases of nano calcium carbonate that are constantly being explored by the leading firms.

Nano calcium carbonate has sparked the interest of researchers, particularly for therapeutic applications. Calcium carbonate-based parts and materials have biocompatible and biodegradable properties, which are perfect for use as a smart carrier of enzymes, drugs and genes. Studies are carried out worldwide to make use of these nanoparticles in various therapeutic applications, such as antibacterial agent to target cancer cells for gene delivery, and also for cancer drug delivery. These new applications offer business opportunities for the calcium carbonate market in the next few years.

Segmental Analysis

The product types considered in the study of the calcium carbonate industry include ground calcium carbonate (GCC) as well as precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC). Out of these, ground calcium carbonate is the leading product type in the market, accounting for over 70% in the year 2020. Ground calcium carbonate is generally utilized as an industrial mineral in paper, plastic fillers and paints and coatings. GCC is also used in cement and help augment the pH in water and soils. It is also used in neutralizing combustion vapors. Therefore, numerous advantages associated with GCC propel the growth of this product type segment. Precipitated calcium carbonate on the other hand, will achieve the highest rate of more than 4% between 2020 and 2027.

Major end-use industries in the global market include construction, paints & coatings, paper, adhesives & sealants, plastics, and others. The paper segment forms the biggest share in the worldwide market. Calcium carbonate is deployed as a cost-effective alternative to wood fiber filler in the paper industry.

Regional Outlook

In 2019, Asia Pacific accounted for more than 40% of the worldwide market and is also on track to attain the fastest growth rate over the apprise period. China, Indonesia, India, New Zealand, and Australia are creating waves in the global market, elevating APAC’s position in the global market. The well-established paper industry coupled with the large-scale manufacturing of paints and coatings and construction across Japan and China favor the APAC market. Also, thanks to the soaring number of government policies in favor of combustion engines and the booming sales of electric vehicles across Japan, India and China, the demand for calcimum carbonate is projected to mount rapidly in the following years.
